The United Nations (UN) Media  network in Yola, has organised  a gender sensitive reportage training for Media practitioners in Adamawa state.

The training which draws about 80 participants from various Media organisations in the state.

The media practitioners were trained on the significance of placing gender issues in the news and the need to take advantage of the power of the media challenge politicians and policy makers and other key stakeholders to champion women's cause.

A veteran journalist and broadcaster, Solomon Kumanga, while delivering his lecture, notes that the media role in setting the agenda is pivotal to addressing women's cause in Nigeria.

He explained the instrumentality of the passage of gender and equal opportunity bill to the progress of women in Adamawa saying it cannot be achieved without the deliberate effort of the media.

Active UN Women Media Network member, Comrade Zare Baba who was a resource person said the media is a critical partner in the passage of the bill and urged journalists to have the passion to promote gender-related issues as issues affecting women largely go unreported or underreported.

Also speaking at the meeting, Mr Dean Peter, a member of the UN Women Media Network, said Adamawa is a pilot state in the implementation of United Nations resolution 1325 stressing the need for journalists to actively participate in the move.

Speaking on issues relating to women, other resource persons, Billy Graham Abel and Solomon Kumanga, identified stereotype, religion and culture as impediments in reporting women issues.

Isaac Maims, a representative of Search For Common Ground, in a closing remarking, appreciated the participants for attending the meetings and urged them to make use of the resolutions reached towards improving on the plight of women.
