BORNO: NEDC Trains 20 Private Security Outfits on Combating insecurity in NorthEast Nigeria
North East Development Commission (NEDC), a body responsible for the recovery and restoration of communities in North East states of Nigeria from the debilitating impact of Boko Haram insurgency and other disasters has trained 20 private security outfits in Borno State in orser to buffer and support the efforts of security agencies towards curbing insecurity in the region.
The 3-day training tagged, ‘The Role of Informal Security Operatives to Combating Insecurity in Northeast Region’ was held at Maiduguri, Borno state Nigeria.
Speaking at the occasion, the Borno State Coordinator of NEDC, Alh Mohammed Umar disclosed that the programme was aimed at enhancing the capacity of private security organisations to actively participate in crime prevention and maintenance of peace in the society
He revealed that aside from providing humanitarian support and empowerement programmes, NEDC also has the mandate of supporting activities that will promote peace and development of the region.
Umar explained that the participants will be trained in areas of deradicalization and reintegration of repentant insurgents, now that the terrorists have begun to surrender in large numbers.
He said “NEDC is targeting 20 security outfits in each state of the region and what we want to inculcate into the security personnel is to update them about what is happening in the security space and how to accommodate those insurgents who have surrendered.
The Training Coordinator, Dr Mohammed Suleiman said the purpose of the training was to provide a network where private security outfits in the state will share knowledge and synergies in order to improve the security situation.
According to him, the programme will cover aspects of intelligence gathering, strengthen collaboration between the organisations, security and law enforcement agencies as well as the community.
Dr Suleiman said “we want to have this knowledge, how a security personnel will handle any suspected criminal case, how to handle a suspect, his role, his limit, these are what we will be discussing during the exercise."
Some of the participants told Daily Rendezvous, that they are delighted at the training and that it was an opportunity to garner more knowledge on the activities of informal and formal security operations.
