Environment: Fintiri Launches Campaign for Plant Four Million Trees in Four Years

Adamawa state governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has launched the Adamawa Green Project (GAP) with the aim of planting four million trees in four years.

Fintiri said his government is ready to support and implement efforts towards ending desertification and reversing the consistent desert encroachment in the state.

Fintiri made the remarks Monday, at an event marking the 2019 World Desertification Day at government house in Yola, Adamawa state.

Speaking at the ocassion tge Adamawa state Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri called for a concerted effort towards helping the state succeed in combating the encroaching desertification in Adamawa.

The governor said, the state government in conjunction with the Great Green Wall Programme, a Pan African Organization, had launched in 2015, a project aimed at cushioning the effects of desertification in seven local government areas of the state.

He maintained that his administration is keen to support all environmental programmes especially afforestation for the development of Adamawa.

Speaking at the occasion, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Aisha Umar, decried that the northern part of Adamawa is the area worst affected by desertification in the state.

Aisha Umar pointed out,that "Overgrazing, indiscriminate bush burning and unchecked felling of trees for fire wood and construction purposes are the major cause of desertification in the state."

She called for commitment to afforestation, efficient management of natural resources and discouraging bush burning, among other measures to combat the menace of desertification and drought in Adamawa.

At the event, goodwill messages were delivered by the State Commandant, National Community Ethics and Value Environmental Corps, Zimron Zidon Mijah and the Representative of National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency NESRIA, Mohammad Salihu Yahaya.

This year's world desertification day set aside by the United Nation is tagged, "Let's Grow the Future" and events marking the day were designed to address the problems related to land degradation and drought.

Highlight of the event was a tree planting exercise by the governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, Deputy Governor, Crowther Seth, Secretary to the State Government, Bashir Ahmad and Chief of Staff Government House, Yola, Maxwell Gidado, among others.
