Africa Reports: Nigeria-Algeria To Strengthen Air, Road, Rail Travels for Greater Intra-African Economic Integration

Nigeria's permanent secretary, in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Gabriel Aduda has met with his counterpart from Algeria, 
the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ramtane Lamamra and the Minister of Transport, Mr. Bekai Aissa where they discussed strategies for deepening bilateral relations between the two countries.

The top government officials noted that it has become imparative to strengthen intra-African economic integration through road, air and rail transport systems connectivity across African countries.

This was made known in a joint press statement issued by Nigeria-Algeria embassies, Wednesday.

The press statement reads, "In continuation of his official visit to the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria for the third Session of Bilateral Consultations, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Ambassador Gabriel T. Aduda, separately met the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Algeria, H.E. Mr. Ramtane Lamamra, and the Minister of Transport of Algeria, Mr. Bekai Aissa, to discuss bilateral relations between the two countries.
"Ambassador Aduda was received by the Algerian Foreign Minister in his office on 7th December, 2021, and the two officials hailed the level of bilateral relations between the two countries and agreed to work to deepen it even further. 

"Both sides identified the importance of intra-African economic integration, including transport connectivity, as key to achieving full regional integration."

The statement adds that, "Ambassador Aduda highlighted the importance of direct air links between Nigeria and Algeria, as well as road and rail links between the two countries. 

"He noted that these will improve people-to-people contact and increase business relations among citizens of the two countries."

At the meeting, Algeria's Minister of Transport reiterated his country’s commitment to undertaking direct flights to Nigeria under the framework of the Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) between the two countries which was signed in 2018. Both sides agreed to discuss the issues in greater detail at a technical level.

The Permanent Secretary was accompanied to both meetings by the Ambassador of Nigeria to Algeria, Mohammed Mabdul, as well as some other top government officials from Nigeria.
