Sen. Girei Host Community to a Holiday Luncheon -Says National Interest More Important Than Our Individual Differences
Daily Rendezvous
The former Senator representing Central Adamawa, Girei Abubukar, has called on politicians to desist from using religion and tribalism to gain political advantage.
Girei, while hosting hundreds of his community members to a luncheon at his family residence said, politicians must learn to place national interest above their personal interest and use their vantage position to strengthen national unity.
Girei made the remarks at a luncheon he organised for his constituents and community members, in Yola, Adamawa state.
Girei said, "I grew up with my friends here in the then Gongola state, we went to school here, then I went to Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria.
"My friends then are still my friends now, we did everything together and we still keep to our circle of friendship. We were never Muslims or Christians, we were never Fulani or Bachama or any other language.
"Non of those things matter or defined who we are or how we relate to each other and that was what we had and still have, that makes us work hard to build our community and our nation together..
"That is the kind of community we should be building for posterity, an atmosphere where we all see each other as a family, Adamawa as our home and Nigeria as our country."
Girei added that, "I have decided to host this get-together because I have been away for a very long time and I want to bring my friends together as a family of good people and together we can build our society.
"And to also celebrate because my family has also been blessed with a new baby whom I named after a childhood friend, Muhammed Chubado."
Friends and well-wishers who attended the event heaped praises on the senator saying, he is a detrabilised Nigerian who regardless of his status and position in life, remains in touch with his childhood friends and community.
Dignitaries who attended the event included, an APC gubernatorial hopeful, Umar Mustapha (The Otumba of Ekiti), an APC chieftain, P. P. Elisha, a state house of Assembly member representing Girei, Hon. Wakili, among others.
