No fewer than 1,082 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from 182 households have benefited from 215 constructed mudbrick houses by International Organization of Migration (IOM).
Also known as Malkohi New City, the 215 housing project meant for the IDPs is sited at Malkohi layout Yola South Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
In his speech the Country Representative of IOM Laurent De Boeck maintained that the project is the modest contribution of the IOM to support displaced and vulnerable people affected by insurgency to resume their lives and livelihood without depending on aid.
He revealed that the IOM in 2021 started implementing a project known as "sustainable integration of internally displaced populations in the northeast Nigeria" using an innovative post emergency approach to humanitarian assistance.
According to De Boeck, the IDPs are largely from Gwoza, Bama, Dikwa, and Monguno LGAs of Borno State who endured immense hardship after being displaced from their homes and fled to safety in Adamawa State and settled at Malkohi village IDP camp.
He revealed that the project prioritize the most vulnerable individuals among which includes: female-headed households, persons with disability or chronical illness, pregnant and lactating mothers and the elderly.
He said that prior to the relocation of the IDPs to their new houses, IOM has provided household items and cash assistance to the IDPs to help them purchase additional items required to assist in kick-starting their new life at the settlement.
He thanked the Adamawa State Governor Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, other Government officials, traditional leaders and nongovernmental organizations for making the project a success.
In his speech at the occasion, the State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, who commissioned the project revealed that the IOM intervention is in tandem with his administration's housing policy.
He said that having realized the importance housing project meant to the people, the state government will not leave anything to chance towards ensuring that his administration meet the housing needs of the masses.
"Our decisions to provide affordable housing for the working class at the Malkohi one thousand housing estate was driven by housing demand from the people.
"I assure all that our administration would continue to explore opportunities and business-friendly atmosphere in the state especially that we enjoy relative peace today in the State".
He assured that as part of his campaign promises, in the next few months citizens should expect to see the commencement and completion of many more projects from the government and in partnership with the private sector.
"For our government in Adamawa, and our party, the People's Democratic Party, housing delivery remains one of the time tested policies for creating growth, economic development, galvanizing employment and reducing crime"
