NIGERIA@63: Maigari Gives 5 Reasons Why Nigeria is Not Yet Independent
The convener of Northeast Concerned Youth Group for Good Governance (NECYGG) and Labour Party chieftain, Joseph Maigari, has outlined reasons Nigeria is yet to attain true independence since 1960.
Maigari pointed out that even the name "Nigeria" was a construct of our colonial masters, and our successive leadership and our governments lacked the vision and courage to make necessary changes to reflect our true nationhood and identity.
Maigari made the remarks in a press statement made available to Rendezvous in Yola, Adamawa state.
According to Maigari, these are the five reasons Nigeria is still struggling 63 years after independence:
1. Name - just as imposed, the people have not had the courage to change it to an indigenous name native to them. The people of Ghana demonstrated they’re in charge of their own country by changing the name from Gold Coast to Ghana. Burkina Faso similarly.
2. Language - the official language since 63years of acclaimed independence is still foreign. No concrete efforts anywhere to develop any of the native languages into official National language.
3. Faiths - the major religions recognized as still as imported
4. Economy - natural crudes still go abroad to be refined and returned at expensive rate to the people. Dollar still determines rates in Nigeria’s economy
5. Law & Politics - Nigeria still depends on borrowed laws; the received English laws, British head/wig worn by lawyers, etc. Democracy and style of politics is still as copied. Except for the corrupted versions, nothing is entirely native about Nigeria other than alien dependency.
The place called Nigeria is still in search of itself.
