FG Declares Tuesday Public Holiday in Honour of Late President Muhammadu Buhari
Abuja, Nigeria — July 14, 2025
The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday in honour of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away recently at the age of 82.
This declaration was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, following the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. The move is part of the ongoing seven-day national mourning period announced by the presidency to pay tribute to the late leader’s service and legacy.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo stated that the holiday serves as a mark of respect for Buhari’s unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s unity, his contributions to democratic governance, and his dedication to national development.
> “President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation. This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld,” the Minister noted.
He further urged citizens to use the day to reflect on the late President’s vision for a united and prosperous Nigeria by promoting peace, patriotism, and national cohesion.
As previously announced, national flags are to be flown at half-mast throughout the seven-day mourning period, which began on Sunday, July 13, 2025.
The Federal Government extended its condolences to the Buhari family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, praying for the peaceful repose of the former President’s soul.
The announcement was signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.
