HOUSE COMMITTEE ON FOREIGN AFFAIRS CONDEMNS THE KILLING OF A NIGERIAN IN IRELAND, CALLS ON THE MINISTRY TO ENSURE COMPREHENSIVE INVESTIGATION
Daily Rendezvous
The Committee on Foreign Affairs of the House of Representatives has strongly condemned the shooting and subsequent death of a 27-year-old Nigerian ,George Nkencho, in Ireland over circumstances that have at best sounded absurd.
In the incident which took place on Wednesday last week, Nkencho was alleged to have threatened a Policeman with a knife, which prompted the application of maximum force to snuff dear life out of the young Nigerian, whose family insists had a history of long depression.
While sympathising with the family of the deceased, especially Nkencho's siblings before whom their brother was shot over five times by a trigger- happy law- enforcement officer, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, House of Representatives, Yusuf Buba Yakub, also condoles with members of the Nigerian community in Ireland, who have since risen in condemnation and protest against the senseless murder of one of their own.
Buba calls on the Hon. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama and the Nigeria High Commission in Ireland not to leave any stone unturned in the investigation of the true circumstances surrounding that most dastardly act by a member of the Police Force in that country.
The Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman and Member representing Gombi/ Hong Federal Constituency of Adamawa State, equally, notes that the souls of several Nigerian nationals have in many countries of the world been senselessly sacrificed on the altar of sheer hatred and mere fear born out of suspicion of Nigerians abroad.
He, therefore, calls on the Federal Government to join efforts with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to ensure that anyone behind this latest act of recklessness does not go unpunished.
Buba, while pledging that the House of Representatives will follow up on the Nkencho murder when it resumes plenary later this month, also enjoins Nigerians in Ireland and, indeed,in all countries across the world to resolve to remain peaceful and law- abiding this New Year and to continue to appreciate the positive transformation in character, integrity and dignity in labour that the current Administration is propagating across the world at the moment while finally noting that it takes only a generation of Nigerians that chooses to live right to change the sad narrative of our country in the global community.
