Breaking: Court Declares Abure’s Tenure Expired, Hands Labour Party to Nenadi Usman

Abuja, August 15, 2025
The lingering leadership tussle in the Labour Party took a decisive turn on Friday as the Federal High Court, Abuja, declared that the tenure of Julius Abure as National Chairman of the party expired on June 8, 2024.

Delivering judgment in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/1523/2025, the court dismissed Abure’s case against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), affirming the commission’s position that his purported leadership and the controversial Nnewi convention of March 27, 2024, were illegal and inconsistent with both the Electoral Act and INEC’s guidelines.

The ruling, which aligns with an earlier Supreme Court decision delivered on April 4, 2025, effectively nullifies Abure’s claim to the party’s top seat and affirms INEC’s rejection of his National Executive Committee (NEC).

In reaction, Interim National Chairman of the Labour Party, Senator Nenadi Usman, welcomed the judgment, describing it as a “clear and authoritative affirmation of the rule of law.”

“I received with profound relief and deep satisfaction the news of the judgment of the Federal High Court, Abuja… This decision stands as yet another unambiguous affirmation of the judiciary’s consistency in upholding the binding pronouncements of the Supreme Court of Nigeria,” Usman said in a statement issued in Abuja.

She commended INEC for what she called its “clarity, courage, and institutional integrity” during the case, noting that the electoral umpire had categorically confirmed the expiration of Abure’s tenure in its sworn testimony before the court.

“With this judgment – and INEC’s clear, unambiguous stance – it is time for all members of the Labour Party to put this needless distraction behind us and recommit ourselves to rebuilding and repositioning our party,” Usman added.

The development effectively places the reins of the Labour Party leadership in the hands of Senator Usman, who has pledged to entrench internal democracy, restore unity, and prepare the party for upcoming political contests.
